.....some people are indifferent to the best or the worst in this life........
I am coming to appreciate Claude Berri as one of the best, and most consistent directors I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.
There is something about this film, just like JEAN DE FLORETTE and MANON OF THE SPRING which is trully magical, and keeps you on your toes. How doyou figure that a slow moving film, with lots of dialogue, and seemingly no direction, does NOT bore you at all?
The dialogue has a peculiar, and very attractive sense of timing. And the fervor of the political situation doesn't help. One just doesn't know if in the next second anyone is going to be killed by the ... whatevers.
Right after the liberation of France by General De Gaulle, and the allied forces, the situation in small town France gets desperate. Many people sided with the Nazis for self protection, and their families. Others hid their communist appreciation. And others went both ways. And then, others worked for the liberation forces. And as expected, this goes as far as splitting up families, and turning neighbors against neighbors, with the exception of the two older men, who are differently opinionated in their politics, but appreciate each other as good men, and spend much time
philosophizing about life, trying to find, and justify a meaning or two.
And then there is the big man who has really no political affiliations, but had to do a few 'strong' things in his younger days in order to survive. In his later days he has grown to appreciate poetry, and is smitten with the idea that he is becoming a poet. And he gets this far because there are no schools, and his bar is being used as a classroom for a few hours several days per week.
The title refers to one of the elder men, who was thinking about the stars one night, and a bomb blew off the roof of the house giving him a view of a clear sky and how far he could see.
The actors are stupendous, and one won't find a much better ensemble around.
YOU REALLY OUGHT TO SEE IT.
