This is a gut wrenching film about music, and specially the training required to get somewhere in the music business. And what a film it is.
Up to about one hundred years ago, the music training scene for either a good singer, or good musician, has been a very proud, and important part of the development of music in Europe. Various pieces of music were written for many contestants, with the intent being to see how far one's voice could make it. Invariably someone did not make it.
This film is about two men, who sang at one time, and are now teaching the secrets of voice work to their pupils of choice. When they competed, one of them had his voice crack, and lost the competition.
Several years later they have trained new pupils for a new competition. ( I won't tell you which is which ) And they are ready to face the new day through their students. One is an aging singer who loves music and spends his time making sure his pupil appreciates and understands it. The other teacher has become an impresario, on whose money many reputable people have been established in the music business. His passion is the success of it all. And the students practice, and practice. One works hard for it. The other
carouses and spends some time having a little fun here and there, and having affairs with the rich women.
And the final contest is set. They have to wear the masks and costumes which hides their persons, so no judge can identify between the two, which guarantees a fair proceeding. They both do well, and as the battle heats with yet tougher singing material one of them eventually falters.
This film is a statement about music. EITHER YOU LOVE IT, or just forget it. Done by a true music lover, because there are moments that are just fabulous.
A MUST SEE FILM.
